‘PUBG’ creator’s next game will feature “planet sized” worlds

Barely a week after ‘PUBG: Battlegrounds’ went free to play, the original creator of the phenomenon that many will feel was the originator of the Battle Royale genre that has taken the gaming industry by storm, Brendan ‘PlayerUnknown’ Greene has revealed a little more about what his new open-world game will be, referring to what he says are goals of creating “planet-sized worlds”.

Previously all we knew about the game was that it is going to be large scale, open-world, and could have something procedurally generated included within it, but now he’s shared a proof of concept tech demo that was produced early in 2021 that gives a little more insight into what he’s thinking. Greene explained the demo, saying:
“This gave me the confidence to think about planet-sized worlds and the possibilities they could afford players”.

The demo shows the first-person viewpoint of a forest that suddenly zooms up into the sky, showcasing a massive amount of land, before zooming back into the forest, then repeating the trick. This comes as a push from PlayerUnknown productions to hire for the game currently known as ‘Prologue’.

There are multiple positions open in the Amsterdam-based studios, from the art department to the management team, researchers, and programmers, suggesting that while the tech on the show is indeed impressive, it’s going to be some time before we get to play whatever Prologue ends up being.

Greene left Krafton to start up his own company in 2021, which is likely why the game was renamed PUBG: Battlegrounds, to slightly disassociate itself with the original “PLAYERUNKNOWN” Battlegrounds moniker. The game had sold over 70 million copies across PC and console by 2020, and the mobile version is also incredibly popular, and being free to play now, there’s no reason to expect it to slow down any time soon.
