PlayStation Is Going To Create A Game Pass Competitor By Name Spartacus

Xbox owners are having a great time this month as Game Pass has kicked off with titles like ‘Mass Effect Legendary Edition’, ‘Spelunky 2’, new horde alien shooter ‘The Anacrusis’, a release date entry to the service for ‘Nobody Saves the World’, and even ‘Rainbow Six Extraction’ is joining Game Pass on January 20th when it comes out.

Speaking to IGN, Xbox boss Phill Spencer addressed the rumors that PlayStation might even be following suit with their similar setup. The rumor started around a new service codenamed “Spartacus” which is supposedly going to replace the existing PlayStation Plus setup, whereby you pay your subscription fee and get a few games each month for PS4 and PS5.

Not surprisingly, Spencer said that when he hears about others doing things like Game Pass, it makes sense to him, because he thinks that’s the right answer.

“I don't mean it to sound like we've got it all figured out, but I think the right answer is allowing your customers to play the games they wanna play, where they wanna play them and giving them choice about how they build their library and being transparent with them about what our plans are in terms of our PC initiatives and our cross-gen initiatives and other things”.

And if - and it’s a big if - Sony is planning to follow Xbox in this method of delivering a subscription model to its users, Spencer doesn’t see it as proof that his team was right to start things off down this road. Spencer said:

“I don't look at it as validation. I, when I'm talking to our teams, I talk about it as an inevitability. So for us, we should continue to innovate, continue to compete, because the things that we're doing might be advantages that we have in the market today, but they're just based on us going first, not that we've created something that no one else can go create”.

It remains to be seen what this project might be.
